"The on-line format works!  The step-by-step demonstrations took me on a journey of discovery.  I soon learned that I had my own style of making marks unique to me.  Through practice, I learned color theory and the fascinating ways water moves on paper. Each week I was eager to build upon previously introduced skills and to undertake learning something new.  With practice and Suzanne’s encouragement, my confidence continues to grow." —Tracy Bernstein, Encinitas CA

Who am I and what's my background?

I am a teaching artist and creative coach connecting the human and spiritual experience through creative process and expression. My signature foundation course in drawing and watercolor, See Here Now emphasizes self-realization through the practice of drawing, watercolor and the history of painting.

Painting with watercolor since the age of five, I was commissioned for much of my early work and my watercolors have been featured in solo and group shows in Los Angeles, Sarasota, FL, Charleston, SC, Petersburg and Culpeper, VA, Nashville, TN, Raleigh, NC, and are in private collections throughout the US and Europe.

In 1997, I developed my original Basic Drawing and Watercolor Workshop in South Carolina for guests at the Kiawah Island Resort as an out-of-door intensive focused on subjects in nature. I've since taught the workshop at museums, art centers, National Audubon sites, National Historic sites, Elderhostels, varieties of schools, and for organizations and private groups across the country.

Ongoing workshop and course engagements over the years have included, the Guilford and Farmington Valley Art Centers in Connecticut, The Gulf Coast Museum of Art in Largo, Florida, San Luis Obispo Art Center in California, the Cheekwood Museum and University School in Nashville, TN, Wyndham Resorts, and the City of Raleigh, North Carolina Parks and Recreation art and community centers.

I served as juror in the Drawing and Printmaking categories for the Scholastic Art Competition and founded and directed the nationwide community drawing initiative, Drawing America.

After studying Drawing, Watercolor, Design and Art History at The Barnes Foundation, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Santa Monica College, and Ringling School of Art and Design, I earned a B.A. in Humanities with a concentration in Drama, Art and Music from New College of Florida including special project work at the Florida State University Asolo Theater.
As a singer songwriter, I recorded six albums and performed throughout Europe and the US. Read a more extensive bio at suzannemcdermott.com
